Getting Started With Zeffy

Getting started for Australian organisations

This guide walks you through setting up your Zeffy account as an Australian not-for-profit or charitable organisation.

Before you begin

Have these ready before starting your account setup:

  • Australian Business Number (ABN) β€” your 11-digit ABN.

  • Organisation's full legal address β€” the street address in Australia.

  • Government-issued photo ID β€” driver's licence or passport for the person completing the setup.

  • Bank account details β€” BSB and account number for the organization's bank account.

  • Business executive details β€” names, dates of birth, addresses, and contact details for anyone with significant management responsibility (directors, officers, or senior managers).

Step 1 β€” Create your Zeffy account

Go to Zeffy and sign up with your name and email. You'll then choose your organisation type:

  • Registered Charity β€” select this if your charity is registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).

  • Other Charity or Organisation β€” for non-registered charities, unincorporated organisations, community groups, schools, religious organizations, and other not-for-profits.

If you select Registered Charity, you'll be asked for your 11-digit ABN.

Step 2 β€” Tell us about your organisation

Fill in your organization details:

  • Organisation name and full Australian address (street, city, state, postcode).

  • Time zone β€” Zeffy will detect this automatically based on your address.

  • Payment descriptor

  • Official website or public social media page (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)

Step 3 β€” Verify your account representative's identity

The person completing the setup must verify their identity by uploading a government-issued photo ID and a selfie.

Acceptable forms of identification:

  • Australian driver's licence

  • Australian passport

Step 4 β€” Accept the connected account agreement

Review and accept Zeffy's connected account agreement. By agreeing, you confirm that the information you've provided is accurate and that you have the authority to set up the account on your organization's behalf.

Step 5 β€” Add your bank account

Add the bank account where you'd like donations to be deposited. You'll need:

  • Account name β€” the legal name on the bank account.

  • BSB number β€” 6 digits identifying your bank and branch.

  • Account number

Donations clear to your account based on Zeffy's standard payout schedule. Learn more about payout schedules.

The bank account must be in your organization's name. Personal bank accounts cannot be connected to Zeffy.

Step 6 β€” Set up two-factor authentication (2FA)

For account security, set up 2FA using either an authenticator app or SMS codes. This adds an extra layer of protection to your account.

You're all set

Once your account is verified, you can start creating donation forms, ticketing pages, and campaigns β€” and start receiving donations the same day.

Compliance considerations for Australian organizations

State and territory fundraising requirements

Australia has a state-by-state fundraising licensing regime. Depending on which states or territories you solicit donations in, you need to register or hold a fundraising license. Check with the relevant authority in each state where you operate.

Raffles and lotteries

Raffle and lottery regulations vary by state, as such, it is not possible for Australian organizations to run raffles and lotteries on Zeffy.

Tax receipts and DGR status

If your organization has Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status, you can issue tax-deductible receipts to donors. Make sure your DGR status is current and that you understand the Australian Taxation Office requirements for issuing receipts.

For verification purposes with our payment processing partner, Stripe, you may be asked to provide one of the following to verify the legal status of your organisation:

  • Australian Business Number Confirmation (Certificate of Registration)

  • Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) Record of Registration (Certificate of Registration)

  • Australian Business Register Extract (Commercial Register Extract)

  • Certificate of Registration of Change of Name

  • Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Extract (Charity or Non-Profit Extract)

  • Consumer Affairs Association Extract (Incorporated Association Extract)
