Issuing refunds: How they work and what happens when you issue a refund

You can refund your supporters directly from your Zeffy account.

When can I initiate a refund?

If your donor paid by credit card, Apple pay or Google pay, you can refund them immediately.

If your donor paid via ACH direct debit (US) or PAD (Canada), their refund can only be initiated 60 days after the payment has gone through successfully. This delay is a security measure implemented on these payments that cannot be bypassed.

If the payment was made over 180 days ago, it cannot be refunded on the platform. You can return the funds to the donor by sending them a check or a bank transfer.

What happens when I issue a refund?

If you have funds in your Zeffy balance

When you successfully initiate a refund, your donor receives an email confirmation that the payment has been refunded and indicates the refunded amount. The refund will immediately be initiated in our payment processor, Stripe. The funds are then transferred back to their original payment method in 5 to 10 business days.

If you do not have funds in your Zeffy balance

When you click "refund", there will be a 7 day delay to ensure we can retrieve the funds from your bank account. After 7 days, the refund is initiated in Stripe. Your donor then receives an email confirmation that the payment has been refunded and indicates the refunded amount. The funds are then transferred back to their original payment method in 5 to 10 business days.

If the card your supporter used to make the payment is no longer active or expired, the funds will still reach them. Their bank will reroute the funds to their account.

Here is how to issue a refund:

1. Go to Payments and locate the transaction you want to refund.

2. Hover over the payment and click "view." The transaction details will open to the right of your screen.

3. Click "More" in the top right corner and select "Refund payment"
