Will answers to custom question map on to fields on my contact pages?
Questions for the donor or buyer will be mapped to their contact page in Zeffy.
Custom contact properties are being released progressively to all users. If you aren't seeing answers to questions for buyers on your contact pages, the feature is not live for your account yet.
What types of questions will maps to fields on contact pages?
All contact information under "Questions for the donor/ buyer" including:
-
First and last name fields: Collected by default on the form
-
Email address: Collected by default on the form
-
Address information: Province/State/Region information are collected by default.
The full address field will be enabled by default for Canadian users issuing tax receipts. If you wish to collect the full mailing address, you can add the "Full address" question type in the "Questions for the buyer" section, below the default contact information we collect for payment processing
-
Phone number: When using the "Phone number" question type as information collected from the buyer
-
Company name: If the buyer checks the field "This is a corporate/organization purchase/donation," the company name they enter will be mapped to the "Company" field
- Buyers only questions: You can add custom questions tailored to your organization's needs, and the answers will be saved directly to that contact's profile page in your Zeffy dashboard.
How to Add Custom Questions to Map to Custom Contact Fields
Buyer Questions vs. Guest Questions: What's the Difference?
This is an important distinction:
- Buyer questions are asked once, regardless of how many tickets or items are purchased. The answers are saved to the buyer's contact page in Zeffy. Use these to collect information about the person making the purchase.
- Guest questions (questions per ticket) are asked for each ticket purchased. They are available in your payments report and printed on each individual e-ticket. Use these when you need information about each attendee, not just the purchaser.
Step-by-Step: Adding Custom Buyer Questions to a Form
Step 1: Open Your Campaign for Editing
- In your Zeffy dashboard, go to Campaigns.
- Select an existing campaign and click Edit, or create a new campaign.
- Navigate to the Questions section within the form builder.
Step 2: Review Default Fields
The following fields are collected from buyers by default and already have corresponding fields on contact pages:
- Full name
- Country and State
You can also enable Full Address collection here. Use the dedicated full address field Zeffy provides — do not create a short-answer question labeled "Full Address," as it will not map correctly to the contact page.
Step 3: Add a Custom Buyer Question
- Click Add Custom Question.
- Select Buyer Only to ensure the question is tied to the buyer's contact profile.
- Choose your question type from the following options:
- Short answer
- Multi-select
- Single select
- Checkbox
- Telephone
- Date
- Enter your question text (e.g., "Date of Birth," "Are you a member?").
- Toggle the question as Required or Not Required.
- Click Create to save the question.
- Repeat to add additional questions as needed.
- Click Save and Exit when finished.
Step 4: Important Notes on Specific Field Types
- Phone Number: Always use the dedicated Telephone question type that Zeffy provides. Do not create a short-answer question labeled "Phone Number" — it will not map to the phone number field on the contact page.
- Full Address: Use Zeffy's built-in Full Address field. A custom short-answer question called "Full Address" will not map correctly.
- Organization/Company Name: This field appears automatically on the contact page when a buyer checks the option indicating their purchase is on behalf of a company or organization at the payment step.
Step 5: Reuse Custom Questions Across Forms
Once a custom question is created, it becomes available to add to any other form in your account — you don't need to recreate it from scratch.
- Open any other campaign and click Edit.
- Go to the Questions section.
- Click Add Custom Question and select your previously created question from the list.
- Save and Exit.
Note: Because these questions map to the same contact profile field, if the same contact answers the same question differently across two forms, the most recent answer will overwrite the previous one on their contact page.
Viewing Answers to Buyer Questions
After a buyer completes your form, their answers to buyer questions are saved in two places:
- Payment record: Click on any payment in your Payments dashboard to view the answers collected from that transaction.
- Contact page: Click on the buyer's name to open their contact profile. Scroll to the Details section to see all custom question answers associated with that contact.
